Independence Hall was officially opened in February, 1959 to commemorate the attainment of Ghana's independence on 6th March, 1957. The first permanent hall of residence now houses male and female students.

Members of the hall are known as "Spartans". The hall consists of 198 rooms in the main hall and 96 rooms in the annex. Facilities include an internet café, communication centre, Games room, Gym, Chapel, Salon, mini mart, Dining Hall etc.

Independence hall is highly esteemed by most (including non-affiliate members) due to its enviable outstanding record of event organization and pace-setting in infrastructural development. Independence hall has won for itself the award of the best hall of residence in the Vice Chancellor’s Excellence Awards for three consecutive years.
